Lando Norris narrowly beat fellow driver and title rival the Australian for the top spot in the dying seconds of practice at the Brazilian Grand Prix. Norris, who seized the championship lead from Piastri by one point after his victory in the Mexican Grand Prix recently, beat the Australian by a tiny margin of 0.023secs. Before then, Oscar Piastri had been the fastest McLaren driver for most of the session before the sprint shootout due at the evening session. Max Verstappen, the other racer in realistic title contention, sitting 36 points behind Norris, finished in 17th position as his Red Bull team followed a different programme. Verstappen's team-mate Yuki Tsunoda was the sole competitor to go off, if briefly, when he rotated at the fourth corner during the early running. The Japanese lost control over the curbs on exit before sliding over the run-off area, and was fortunate to escape with just a minor contact of the wall. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton also lost it, at the very end of the session, rotating twice through the quick descending corner approaching the final bend on to the main straight. The seven-time champion ended the session in 19th, trailing team-mate the Monegasque driver. The McLaren drivers were well clear of the rest of the field, with Nico Hulkenberg's car third fastest, 0.619secs behind Piastri's pace. Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso was fourth quickest, with Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto ahead of the Mercedes of Russell and Alpine's Pierre Gasly and Williams' Carlos Sainz.
