The Tottenham defender scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and delivered Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from corners in the first half to put their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the tally five minutes after the defender's opener, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a handful of chances, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, advising the match official to check the score on the screen and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton remain in 14th position and are six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils role at each end of pitch

Following a uninspiring weekday display in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a only attempts on goal, Frank opted for the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an free the defender to head home.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defensive duties, combining well with his defensive colleague as the pair handled superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have faded slightly and fans flocked to the gates after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a major concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of established strikers - had scored just one league goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to add to that poor tally on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having room and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, too, failed to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. The majority of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Tottenham box.
